Car near the end of its COE: export, scrap or renew?

When a car's COE is close to expiry you can renew the COE and keep driving, or deregister the car by exporting or scrapping it. Exporting can pay more than scrapping for a car in good condition. Compare the export offer, the rebates due on deregistration and the cost of renewing before you decide.

Option 1: renew the COE

You pay the Prevailing Quota Premium to extend the COE for 5 or 10 years. It suits a car you know well and want to keep. Check the current premium on LTA's OneMotoring site.

Option 2: export the car

An export buyer pays for the car and ships it overseas, and the car is deregistered in Singapore. Popular models in good condition often fetch more this way than through a local sale near COE expiry.

Option 3: scrap the car

The car is deregistered and scrapped. This is usually the choice for cars that are not worth exporting.

Rebates on deregistration

When a car is deregistered, LTA pays any PARF rebate (for eligible cars) and a COE rebate for the unused part of the COE to the owner. Your car's figures are on LTA's OneMotoring site.
